Analysing the Questionnaire

My college magazine is related to young adults between the ages of 14-21. Also it is related to both the male and female gender of the public and all ethnicities can connect to this magazine. Most of the readers are from Middlesbrough, but other people from different locations can also read it.

The magazine is aimed at people who enjoy their music and like hanging out with their friends, also for people who have friendly, relaxed and enthusiastic personalities towards life.
Some of the questions were purposely presented on the questionnaire for certain reasons. I asked what their parents did for a living, to discover what type of social grade their parents fit into. Most of the people I asked, their parents did teaching for a career which means that they would fall into the category of C1, although other teachers who may have a higher status in the school may fall under the category B.

College Magazine

Before we produce our music magazine for assesment, we have to make sure we have the skills to produce it. To do this, we have been given the task to create a college magazine with a front cover and contents page to give us an insight on how to use our creative skills to the best use.

I have researched other college magazines to give me some inspiration on how to create my own, and this is what i found:

This magazine uses the average, cool and relaxed pose by looking away from the camera with a slight smile. Its also a medium close up (MCU) shot to emphasise on his face and shoulders, the title 'relevant' and the blue font 'zac levi' actually frames the males face to make it much more eye catching as it gives it that outline. The lighting on the photograph gives the audience that shadow effect with some of his face high key and the other half low key. The angle of the shot is at eye level, so there is no power or status included with the shot. The proxemics of the photograph show that this man is taking up the full space of the front cover, which tells us that the magazine is focusing directly on him. Also the use of indirect mode of address, this gives the audience that feeling of invitement towards the magazine and that it's trying to make you read more and more.

Introduction

This is the first blog of my music magazine coursework project.  Over the course of this blog, I will show you how I have been building up ideas for my music magazine.
I am particulary interested in RnB and Indie Rock. Some artists that i really enjoy listening to are The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Kings of Leon, Oasis, Jason Derulo, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Eminem.
The most natural choice of magazine for me to study is NME.
NME magazine is for Indie/Pop fans, who really enjoy the rock music with some modern features. It is also useful for fans finding out more information about new and fresh bands who are being noticed in places like America and Britain. The magazine also gives them the chance to recieve albums or posters of their favourite bands.

'Whats on TV' and 'Auto Trader' are the two best selling magazines with over a 100,000 copies sold in one year from June 2009-July 2010. Although there are many other magazines that are very close to these figures including Radio Times, Zoo and Nuts. With NME, that falls rapidly underneath these magazines with only 294,000 copies sold, this explains that even though it is a very well known magazine it's not always the most popular with the public as it only attracts a certain audience.

Representation (Lesson 1)

How are stereotypes formed?

Oversimplification, Categorisation and some form of Judgement.

Focusing on some feature, often one that exibitsthe cause of 'how they are'.

Negative impressions sometimes reinforced and repeated so often as to become 'true'.

Generalising rather than exploring the full range. The implicit personality theory says that some characteristics may be linked together.

Stereo types are not actual people, but widely circulated ideas or assumptions.

Stereotype is not always negative, it can sometimes be very positive.

Definitions

Stereotype- to characterise or regard something.
Archetype- an original pattern which all things of the same kind are copied.

Coursework Introduction

What the coursework invovles?

Creating a Preliminary task.
Producing a front cover and contents page of a college magazine to practice using design and ICT skills.
Developing a planning portfolio.
This will be achieved through the use of an online blog (blogger.com).
Designing a magazine production.
This will include producing a front cover, contents page and doublepage spread for a new music magazine in the modern age.
Evaluating your work.
This is just to explain how and why you did what you did.

How the coursework is marked?

Production work - 60%
Research and Planning - 20%
Evaluation - 20%
AS Media - The coursework altogether will make up 50%of the total grade for that year.
A2 Media - This means that the coursework alone is worth 25% of that total grade.

Key Concept

R.A.I.L.I.N.G

REPRESENTATION
AUDIENCE
IDEOLOGY
LANGUAGE
INSTITUTION
NARRATIVE
GENRE

How these fit into the coursework?

Representation-This is to show that you understand how music artists are portrayed in the media industry and how they are marketed.

Audience- This is very important in the early stages as the way you produce the magazine must appeal to the readers, therefore you must know as much as possible about them.

Ideology- This is about connecting with the way the reader and the artists think, feel, believe and behave. Whether they are backed up by powerful figures/organisations or going against them.

Language- This is to show how you connect to the audience correctly, using the best methods and techniques.

Institution- These are the organisations/people that own and produce the media, for example IPC Media (NME). You will need to find an appropriate institution for your own magazine.

Narrative- This can be how a music magazine manipulates, follows or presents a feature story about a music artist. Musicians such as Pete Docherty and Amy Winehouse are associated with the same type of narrative.

Genre- There are new music genres being created constantly, you will learn about smaller niche audiences and even identify and stimulate a trend so that it can become a complete music scene (this is something music magazines do all the time).
